Saudi Development Fund supports expansion of Bahrein Tubli Sewage Treatment Plant

Representatives from the Saudi Development Fund, have visited Bahrein to discuss the expansion of Tubli Sewage Treatment Plant, a project funded by a Saudi grant as part of the GCC Development Program, Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning.

Works Affairs Undersecretary Eng. AhmedA.Aziz Al Khayyat met with The Saudi delegation Eng. Mohammed bin Abdul Aziz Al Hussain. Eng. Faisal bin Khalid Al Yahya and Eng. Mshari bin Abdul Latif Al Awwad. Also present from the Ministry were Financial Resources Director Nada Mustafa, Sanitary Engineering Planning & Projects Director Eng. Nazha Abo Hindi and Ministry of Finance Chief of Infrastructure Projects Eng. Hamad Al Mahmoud.

According to Al Khayyat, the expansion of Tubli Sewage Treatment Plant, which is funded by a joint Saudi-Kuwait fund, work comprises of constructing four buildings funded by the Saudi Development Fund. The final designs and tendering documents for the construction of the four buildings were completed by the Ministry’s Construction Projects Directorate and Cost Engineering Directorate. The prior approval was granted by the Tender Board.

The project aims to upgrade the secondary treatment unit at Tubli STP, using the ‘HYBACS’ technique, to improve the quality of water and the 100,000m3/day overflow to Tubli Plant. The project deploys proprietary SMARTTM reactor units that stimulate a special and specific bacterial pattern with a high biological activity that has the ability to deal with different levels of organic materials.

Project Manager Eng. Zaid Mohammed Al Kilani delivered a presentation highlighting phase 4 of the expansion work and the consultancy and supervision project. The BD138,134,922.450 project was earlier awarded to the coalition of the companies WTI Water Technology, AzmeelContracting and Tecton Engineering & Construction.

The project consultancy services and supervision were awarded to the coalition of Q International Consultants and P2m Berlin at a cost of BD2,027,230, funded by the Kuwaiti Development Fund. Work is expected to be implemented over 36 months, besides the two-month trial operation of the plant. Work is expected to commence in May 2018 and complete in April 2021.

The Ministry of Works has also separately gone out to tender with a contract for pre-contract consultancy services to identify the sewage needs of the southwest region of the Kingdom of Bahrain and develop a Sewage Masterplan. The successful consultant will set out the most feasible solutions to serve all existing and new developments – services required under the contract include:

• Identifying the size and alignment of main trunk sewer lines
• Studying the possibility of decommissioning existing pumping stations within the project boundaries.

The Ministry is inviting tenders from qualified Engineering Consultancy firms registered with The Council for Regulating the Practice of Engineering Professions (CRPEP) and with the relevant Bahrain Commercial Registration.
