Saudi Arabia progresses investment in major desalination, water and wastewater schemes

The Water and Electricity Company (WEC) of Saudi Arabia is progressing investment in a number of major desalination, water and wastewater projects.
WEC has announced that the following eight major international engineering groups have been pre-qualified as supervision consultants for upcoming desalination projects in the Kingdom:
- Atkins Global
- Ayesa
- Fichtner
- ilftecon
- Pöyry
- Tractebel engie
- TYPSA
- WSP
The Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al Fadley and Chairman of the Board of Directors of WEC has also separately signed an agreement for the Rabigh 3 Independent Water Project with the winning consortium of ACWA Power International and Saudi Brothers’ Commercial Company.
In addition, WEC has appointed a consortium comprising Marubeni Corporation, Abdul Latif Jameel Commercial Development Company, Acciona Agua SA and Rawafid Alhadarah Holding Company the preferred bidder for the Shuqaiq 3 IWP Project.
The winning consortium will be responsible for the development, design, financing, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant of 450,000 m3/day and the development, design, financing, construction, commissioning and transfer of the associated Electrical Special Facilities – the Shuqaiq 3 IWP Project.
Finally, WEC has appointed a consortium comprising Metito Utilities Limited, Mowah Company and Orascom Construction as the Preferred Bidder for the development, design, financing, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the Dammam ISTP of 200,000 m3/day.
In September 2018 the Saudi Arabia Council of Ministers approved the following projects for participation by the private sector:
- Rabigh-3 IWP with capacity of 600,000 m3/day
- Shuqaiq-3 IWP with capacity of 380,000 m3/day and may increase as per the demand up to 450,000 m3/day
- Jubail-3 IWPP with capacity of 1,170,000 m3/day and 3,000MW
- Yanbu-4 IWP with capacity of 450,000 m3/day
- Taif ISTP with capacity of 270,000 m3/day
- Jeddah Airport-2 ISTP with capacity of 500,000 m3/day
