Kuwait to target 50% increase in desalinated water capacity over next decade

A senior official in the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water has said that Kuwait has set itself a target of increasing its desalinated water production capacity by 50% over the next decade – up from the current 660 million gallons per day to 990 million gallons per day by 2030
In the next three years the country is planning to partner with private companies on a number of projects to increase water production.
According to a local press report, Iqbal Al Tayyar, director of technical supervision department at the Ministry, made the comments to reporters attending the Mena Desalination Projects Conference in Abu Dhabi on Sunday this week.
Kuwait is also seeking to use renewable energy in desalination plants with a capacity of 1500 megawatts and 5,000 megawatts.
She also said that Gulf states are now considering the creation of a regional water grid to meet growing demand for water in the region.along the lines of an electricity grid.
However, despite telling reporters that Kuwait , Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were ready to proceed, she did not provide a project timeline and said the States are currently waiting for an official agreement on the proposal.
